Sing Again the Song of Moses
“‘No one is holy like the LORD,
For there is none besides You,
Nor is there any rock like our God.’” (I Samuel 2:2 NKJV)
This excerpt is from Hannah’s prayer, upon the consecration of her son, Samuel, to the service of the Lord. She, who had been barren, had prayed for a son, whom she would in return lend to the Lord (I Samuel 1:28; “give him to the Lord all the days of his life,” in verse 11); God had faithfully provided that son for her. Even more astounding, she had three more sons and two daughters thereafter (I Samuel 2:21).
In the tradition of our church, this is essentially what we are doing when we dedicate our kids to the Lord. We are committing them to Him for His use, and ourselves to be faithful stewards in raising them up. Interestingly, in reviewing the story one finds that Eli the Priest was not a particularly godly man, at least not a particularly good father figure. Nonetheless, God honored Hannah’s faith and used Eli to deliver His promise to her, guiding young Samuel as he grew.
Hannah looked to God in faith, and He gave her Samuel. Samuel, despite the questionable parenting skills of Eli, learned from him to say, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears,” (I Samuel 3:10) and served God faithfully for years. Samuel anointed David, beginning the Davidic line from which Jesus was eventually born. One woman’s fervent prayer had that kind of impact. Truly, “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” (James 5:16 NKJV)
Most notable about today’s scripture is Hannah’s acknowledgement of the greatness of Her God. To some degree, she echoes the Song of Moses from Exodus, where he said,
“‘Who is like You, O LORD, among the gods?
Who is like You, glorious in holiness,
Fearful in praises, doing wonders?’” (Exodus 15:11 NKJV)
When God acts on our behalf, it is only appropriate that we acknowledge His greatness and glory. Even in the last day, when the great beast has been defeated, the Song of Moses will again ring forth. As was revealed to John on Patmos,
“They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying:
‘Great and marvelous are Your works,
Lord God Almighty!
Just and true are Your ways,
O King of the saints!’” (Revelation 15:3 NKJV)
If we are not finding reasons to echo this song of praise to our Father, our vision is not big enough. What do we need that only God can accomplish? Ask Him, then look for His answer. Jeremiah was shut up in prison when the Lord spoke to him, saying, “‘“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”’” (Jeremiah 33:3 NKJV) His promises are true. He will perform it.
