Greater Things to Come

“Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him.”

I really like the first part of this passage. It’s an instance of all three members of the Triune Godhead being on display at the same time. Jesus was validated by the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove and the voice of God from heaven.

More notable to me in this passage, however, is that immediately after that moment of affirmation and glory, “the Spirit drove (Jesus) into the wilderness,” where He would face deprivation, discomfort and temptation. Peter told us, “Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you . . ..” (I Peter 4:12 NKJV) How often do we see this? When we have experienced God’s blessings, trials should not surprise us.

At the outset the Spirit drove Him. At the conclusion angels ministered to Him. In-between, He, was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15, NKJV)

Feeling almost abandoned? Know that the Comforter is there waiting for us to demonstrate our faith. We may feel we have done what God asked, yet we run into trouble. That doesn’t necessarily mean we are out of His will; it may mean He has greater things for us still.

Have faith; endure; stand strong in the power of His might. He will sustain you.
