Honor Where Honor is Due
“Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” (Ephesians 6:2-3, NKJV)
It has been said before but is important to remember that the chapter and verse separations as well as the sub-headings for each version were all added as part of the translation and compilation process. This makes it easier for us to cite references (book, chapter and verse) but harder sometimes to get the overall flow of the text.
We who are parents like to take these two verses, as well as verse 1 (“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.”) on their own, sometimes forgetting that Paul also gave instructions to us immediately thereafter in verse 4 (“And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.”).
Taking in the larger context, however, you can go all the way back to chapter 5 in this regard. In verse 15 of that chapter, Paul says, “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” After some exposition on that concept, he then moves into specific application to wives, husbands and children (within the family), then bondservants (aka, slaves) and masters (our work life).
What is his overall message? In his personal life, Paul tells us how he has managed the vicissitudes of life. In Philippians 4:11-13 he says, “. . . I have learned in whatever stat I am, to be content: I know how to be abased and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Therein lies the secret. In my own strength, I am nothing. By His undergirding, I can do all things. That being said, let’s reiterate – “Kids – obey your parents and honor your father and mother, just because they are your father and mother.”
It’s Fathers’ Day weekend. Go see your dad, if you’re able. If that’s out, give him a call, text or message. Maybe even sit down and write an encouraging letter. God will honor that.
