No, Never Alone
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (John 14:27, NKJV)
Twice in this chapter, Jesus reassures His disciples, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (Vs. 1 & 26) Clearly He knew their world was being turned upside down by His making it clear to them 1) He was going to be leaving them and 2) that would come by means of His death. Imagine the confusion!
For three years they had been following this Man, learning from Him, becoming close to Him and all their fellow disciples, and now He was telling them His death was imminent and part of God’s plan. “Oooo-kay,” they thought. “How is this going to work? What will we do now?”
Jesus’s answer was, “Don’t worry. I’m going ahead of you to My Father to prepare the way for you. And while you’re here, I’ll provide the Comforter, whose Presence will make all the difference in the world. So I say again – don’t worry.”
That is His message to us today. Jesus still goes before us, preparing the way for us. The Comforter helps us to hold fast David’s injunction,
“Commit your way to the LORD,
Trust also in Him,
And He shall bring it to pass.” (Psalms 37:5 NKJV)
And with the Holy Spirit’s aid, following the directive from Proverbs becomes even more plausible.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV)
He will never leave us nor forsake us. Let not your heart be troubled.
