Worthy of This Calling
“Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power, that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
(II Thessalonians 1:11-12 NKJV https://www.bible.com/bible/114/2th.1.11-12.nkjv)
Wow! Verses 3-8 are comprised of one sentence! Paul is an English teacher’s dream or nightmare, because unpacking his convoluted sentences can be quite a task.
Verses 11-12 are also one sentence, with quite a few conditional clauses, but let’s see if we can briefly break it down. The basic root of the sentence is, “We pray that God would count you worthy of this calling.” What is the calling? It is found in verse 10; “. . . when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe. . . .” All the modifiers point back to that calling.
